In the manufacture of polyurethane foam, silicone surfactant is used due to the following reasons.
1. It facilitates the mixing of raw materials
2. It helps the foam grow by lowering the surface tension of urethane system
3. It stops diffusion of gas by lowering pressure difference among bubbles and prevents imbalance in growing cells
4. It stabilizes urethane cells and at the same time, equalizes their flexibility and density
5. In case of rigid foam, it improves insulating capacity by increasing independent bubble fraction of the cells
6. In case of soft foam, the degree of flexibility can be adjustable
